EQUSaT Guild Launches Soap Making Project to Promote Student Innovation and Sustainability Masaka

The Guild Leadership of Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT) has launched a new Soap Making Project, an entrepreneurial and sustainability initiative aimed at empowering students with practical business and innovation skills. The project focuses on the production of high-quality liquid soap for use within the university’s offices, hostels, and laboratories.

The initiative, which started earlier this year with a startup capital of UGX 800,000, was officially unveiled on campus amid great excitement from students and staff. Led by the Guild Leadership, the project seeks to enhance hygiene standards at the university while generating income to support student activities and community projects. According to the project’s organizers, the soap production unit currently has a weekly output capacity of 50 liters, with plans underway to expand production to serve external clients within Masaka City.

Speaking during the launch, members of the Guild Leadership emphasized that the project reflects EQUSaT’s commitment to education through innovation and practical skills. They highlighted that the initiative provides an opportunity for students to learn entrepreneurship, financial management, and teamwork, while contributing to the university’s sustainability goals. The project employs 10 student members in roles ranging from production and quality control to marketing and packaging, offering hands-on experience in business operations.

With an estimated annual income of UGX 6–8 million and a net revenue of around UGX 2.5 million, the EQUSaT Soap Making Project is already making a significant impact. The Guild Leadership pledged to reinvest proceeds into student innovation programs and expand the initiative’s reach. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo, commended the students for their creativity and affirmed the university’s continued support for student-led ventures that promote entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
