On 12 August 2026, International Youth Day gave us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the role young people play in shaping the world we live in. This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” is a powerful reminder that although young people come from different backgrounds and face different realities, many of their hopes are the same: a safe, healthy and sustainable future.
Few issues bring this shared aspiration into sharper focus than climate change.
For a young person in one community, climate change may mean a prolonged drought that affects food and livelihoods. For another, it may mean floods, extreme heat or the loss of opportunities. The experiences may be different, but the concern is shared—the desire to live in a world where people and nature can thrive.
Young people are not simply waiting for someone else to solve this challenge. They are already taking action. From environmental awareness campaigns and tree planting to innovation, waste management and sustainable entrepreneurship, young people are finding practical ways to respond to a changing climate.
As an SDGs Officer, I believe this is where the spirit of the theme becomes particularly meaningful. Our contexts may differ, but our aspirations connect us. Climate action therefore requires us to listen to young people, support their ideas and create opportunities for them to participate meaningfully in building sustainable communities.
International Youth Day should not only be a celebration of young people. It should also be a reminder that their voices, ideas and actions matter today.
Different contexts. Different experiences. One shared aspiration: a better future for everyone.
And building that future starts with the choices we make now.
