EQUSaT Launches Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health to Address Uganda’s Health Needs

Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT) has officially launched its long-anticipated Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health Degree, marking a historic milestone in the university’s contribution to Uganda’s healthcare system.

The program launch follows a successful inspection and accreditation by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) earlier this year. The NCHE delegation commended EQUSaT for its modern infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories, a well-equipped dental unit, and its theatre-like lecture halls—all of which meet national standards for health science education.

Speaking during the launch, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo, emphasized the relevance of the program in building community resilience and advancing disease prevention efforts.

“This program has been designed to produce competent, ethical, and innovative public health professionals who will serve not only Uganda but also the East African region,” he said.

The Public Health program will focus on key areas such as epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion, health policy, and community health interventions, aligning with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Also speaking at the event was the Community Health department head, Mr. Igga Ibrahim, who played a pivotal role in developing the curriculum and institutional policies.

“Our goal is to train future public health leaders who are grounded in scientific knowledge and practical experience. We are integrating digital health tools and community engagement models to prepare our graduates for r global challenges,” he said.
