The World Oral Health Day 2025 celebrations, held on March 20, 2025, at Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT) in Masaka City, were a resounding success, significantly advancing oral health awareness in the Greater Masaka Region.
The week-long event, which ran from March 14-20, brought together dental professionals, students, and the local community under the theme “A Healthy Mouth is a Healthy Mind.” The initiative was aimed at promoting oral health awareness, provide free dental services, and encourage preventive dental care.
More than 5,000 individuals across various communities benefited from free dental checkups, dental treatments, and oral health education. Oral health camps were conducted at Hill Road Public School, Kalisizo District Hospital, Butenga Health Centre, Sembabule HCIV, Mweruka Junior School, and EQUSaT/Masaka Regional Referral Hospital (RRH).
EQUSaT’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mouhammad Mpezamihigo, commended the initiative, describing it as a game-changer for community oral health. He emphasized EQUSaT’s commitment to fostering health awareness and enhancing public access to dental care.
The final day’s celebrations were officiated by Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health Services at the Ministry of Health. Dr. Olaro reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to oral health promotion, stressing its vital role in overall well-being.
The event also featured Dr. Matthew Rubona, President of the Uganda Dental Association (UDA), who underscored the need to prioritize dental health in Uganda. He urged more students to pursue dentistry to address the shortage of dental surgeons in the country.
The success of the camps and final-day celebrations was made possible through the support of key partners, sponsors, and well-wishers, including Colgate Palmolive, Kushaba Science Hub, Routine Dental and Medical Supplies, City Dental, East African Medical Vitals, White Dent, Troikaa, Afri-Oral Health Care, Crown Healthcare, UDOTA, Brighter Smiles, Yekko Dental Clinic, Red Cross Uganda, Donau Dental, Bataringaya Foundation, Sterling Dental, Bhandari Dental Care, Good Hands Africa, Oral Health Advocacy Initiative, FDI, Fresh Up, WhiteDent, and many others.
